How to Choose a Korean Skincare Supplier: 7 Checks Before You Sign
Finding a Korean skincare supplier is easy. Finding the right one is not. Search results are full of resellers, parallel importers and one-person shops that look like distributors. Some are excellent. Others ship short-dated stock, cannot prove where the products came from, or disappear after the first order.
If you run a beauty shop, an online store or a distribution business, the supplier you choose decides your margins, your reorder speed and — most importantly — whether your customers trust what you sell. Here are seven checks to run before you sign anything.
1. Is the supplier the brand, or authorized by the brand?
Start with the most important question: where does the product actually come from?
- Brand-direct — you buy from the Korean company that makes or owns the product.
- Authorized distributor — a company the brand has officially appointed, often for a region.
- Reseller / parallel importer — a company buying stock elsewhere and reselling it.
Resellers are not always bad, but you lose control over batch dates, pricing stability and after-sales support. Ask for a letter of authorization or a direct confirmation from the brand. A good supplier will not be offended by the question.
2. Can they share the documents your market needs?
Every market has its own rules. Before you commit, ask which of these the supplier can provide:
- Ingredient list (INCI) in English
- Certificate of Analysis (CoA) or test reports
- MSDS / safety data sheet
- Registration support for your region — for example CPNP for the EU or MoCRA listing in the US
If you sell in Europe, our K-beauty Europe CPNP checklist walks through what you need.
3. Are the MOQ and pricing realistic for your size?
Minimum order quantities vary widely between brands. A large brand may set MOQs that only suit big distributors, while smaller brands are often flexible for a first order. Ask:
- What is the MOQ per SKU and per order?
- Is there a mixed-carton option?
- How does pricing change at higher volumes?
Read our guide to K-beauty wholesale minimum orders to know what to expect before you negotiate.
4. How fresh is the stock?
Shelf life is a quiet margin killer. A product with only a few months left is hard to sell at full price. Ask for the manufacturing date or expiry date of the batch you will receive, not just the general shelf life of the product. Our shelf life guide for wholesale buyers explains what to check on the label.
5. Is the labeling ready for your market?
Korean packaging often carries Korean-only text. Depending on where you sell, you may need English labels, local-language stickers or specific warnings. Check:
- Is there an export version of the packaging?
- Who applies the labels — the supplier or you?
- Are the claims on the box allowed in your country?
6. What are the lead time and shipping terms?

Ask how long production or picking takes, which incoterms they use (EXW, FOB, DDP and so on) and who handles customs paperwork. A low unit price can turn expensive once freight, duties and delays are added. Get the full landed cost before you compare suppliers.
7. Can you test the products first?
Never commit to a full carton of something you have not touched. Texture, scent and packaging quality matter to your customers, and a spec sheet cannot show them. A supplier that makes sampling difficult is telling you something.

The 7-point supplier checklist
| # | Check | Ask the supplier | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Source | Are you the brand or authorized by it? | No proof of authorization |
| 2 | Documents | Can you share INCI, CoA, MSDS? | "We don't have that" |
| 3 | MOQ & pricing | MOQ per SKU? Mixed cartons? | MOQ far above your size |
| 4 | Freshness | Batch manufacturing / expiry date? | Refuses to share dates |
| 5 | Labeling | Export packaging? Who labels? | Korean-only labels, no plan |
| 6 | Lead time & terms | Lead time, incoterms, customs? | No clear landed cost |
| 7 | Samples | Can I test before ordering? | No samples at any price |
Print it, and score each supplier from 1 to 3 on every line. The one with the highest score is usually the safest first order — not always the cheapest one.
Why buying brand-direct makes these checks easier
Most of the checks above become simpler when you talk to the brand itself. Documents come from the source, batch dates are accurate, and pricing does not depend on a middleman's margin. Hannaru connects buyers with more than 200+ verified Korean brands, and you can use "Message brand" to ask about certificates, MOQ or exclusivity directly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Korean skincare supplier and a distributor? "Supplier" is a broad word for anyone who sells to you. A distributor is usually appointed by the brand for a specific region and may hold exclusive rights. Always ask which one you are dealing with.
Is it safe to buy Korean skincare from resellers? It can be, but you have less control over authenticity, batch dates and after-sales support. If you choose a reseller, ask for invoices or documents that show where the stock came from.
How many suppliers should I start with? Many small shops start with a few brands that fit their customers, test them, and expand from there. Sampling first keeps the risk low.
Can I get samples before choosing a supplier? Yes. On Hannaru, Naru Box lets you request free samples from several verified brands in one box; approved buyers' first box ships free.
